08:35:52, 08:35:51, 08:35:50….These are the first few seconds of my today morning when I logged on to a website as part of the early morning ritual. My eyes were caught at an unusual sight of a digital clock hanging on the top right side of the home page. I immediately swung my eyes to my wrist watch for the time which was way off the one displayed.
Upon a little deliberation, it occurred to my prematurely worn-out and hence slowed down brain to be a countdown to an eagerly awaited event being touted as a gigantic achievement of modern
Another vindication of the maxim, all small things come in a small package, and a complete antithesis to its name, Nano is one enormous testimony to the rising power of Indian Industrial Ingenuity and its coming of age.
Not only the never ending anaconda like snarl ups , an acute mismatch between the parking space available and the number of vehicles further throws a spanner on the joy of owning the car. Add to this chaos the toxic gases these mean machines will vomit and it becomes a perfect recipe for a disaster.
I feel that the answer to the rising needs and aspiration of Indian middle class is not a Nano , but a world class public transport system which provides them with the comfort, safety and reliability of a personal four wheeler , even if it comes at a premium. But like always, our government’s intentions have lagged way behind the abilities and vision of our entrepreneurs. Many projects meant to change the landscape of Indian Public transport system are running terrible behind their schedules or caught up in the warp zone of beaureacracy.
My fear stems from a feeling that Nano is product that due to lack of supporting infrastructure(Wide Roads, Flyovers and Parking space) is a little ahead of its time and portends a pandemonium which will do more harm than good.

A different perspective, Rahul...
But then a few questions popped up in my mind.
Did the lack of infrastructure ever curb the rich man’s aspiration of driving a Honda or a Toyota??
So why should it curb the common man’s aspiration. (And isn’t our nation full of this common man?)
When I think of this then I believe that Tata Nano has infact revoutionized an industry who had very conveniently forgotten the aspiration of this common man.
Similar work was done by Reliance(& I am not talking about its business or marketing success/failure) when it made mobiles within accessible price points to the common man…..and now you have a burgeoning telecom sector.
Existing Infrastructure has to be built upon…no questions about that. But you cant restrict dreams and aspirations of millions because of this constraint.
And it was never ever about technology….it was about fulfilling a million dreams..
Hence, Nano is very aptly called the ‘People’s Car’. And hats off to the man who fulfilled this dream...Ratan Tata..he is truly the genius that Vladmir spoke about when he quoted, “Genius is an African who dreams up snow.”
Nishant , I completely agree with you for I have all the respect for Ratan Tata for having empowered millions of Common man to not only realize their dream but also another million to now afford to dream about owning a car - Its a different issue that a good conditioned second hand MAruti 800 was always available for a price of a Nano -
However, my only attempt here is to play a devils advocate and raise an alarm on the side affects which are equally important to speak about and act upon, lest it gets overlooked in the jubilation.. My concern is a little practical than emotive..
awesome!!! seems like, u spoke my mind... If any committee had to be called for discussion on the topic, count me in. Totally against Nano flooding Indian roads. Forget the "common and middle class deserve pleasure too". Its just a marketing strategy.
I wonder how Narendra Modi didn't see thru this!!!
I agree..Its a very well played out marketing gimmick so conveniently being touted as a Mass Movement completely ignoring that it may turn out to be a Stampede...
Rahul,I totally agree with you and I believe in cities like Mumbai where there is no scope of expanding howsoever hard (or lack of it)the authorities try as there is no space for Mumbai to expand horizontally, it being surrounded by water bodies.
But if it is being proclaimed as PEOPLES car it should remain peoples car and not become an object of desire for the affluent rich who like a 5 year old child may want to have a complete set (different clors) of a new toy which might take the place of pride on his toy rack rack when new but just remain idle once a new toy is launched thus cluttering his toy rack.
For this Ratan Tata could take one step further and see to it that a family can have only 1 Nano and not not a fleet of Nanos.
But everything said and done Kudos for Ratan as he proved the world wrong when years before Nano launched a competitor quoted that its good to dream but all dreams do not turn into reality
